Warning: This document has markup and lists set to be hidden, so it can secretly include the chunks as described so you can try out joining for yourself.

Joining Markup To Its Related Chunk

Text— cph=82— clh=63—

Suppose you have a list, where you need to check item 2. You can't do that now, so you add a task to remind yourself:

Table— cph=64— clh=64— css=border-color:silver— style=2— series=— title=Task not joined— header-rows=1—

TableColumn— cph=42— clh=42— css=border-right-style:hidden; width:auto— cell-style=padding-left:12pt; padding-right:0pt; margin-right:0pt—

TableColumn— cph=42— clh=42— css=width:6in— style=1—

TableRow— cph=42— clh=42—

TableRow— cph=42— clh=42—

TableRow— cph=42— clh=42—

TableRow— cph=42— clh=42—

TableCell— cph=42— clh=42— style=2—

Text— cph=44— clh=44— user-style=Button_Description—

TableCell— cph=42— clh=42— join=Y—

Text— cph=44— clh=44— user-style=Button_Description—

Stated fact 1

TableCell— cph=42— clh=42— style=2—

Text— cph=44— clh=44— user-style=Button_Description—

TableCell— cph=42— clh=42— join=Y—

Text— cph=44— clh=44— user-style=Button_Description—

Stated fact 2

TableCell— cph=42— clh=42— style=2—

Figure— cph=44— clh=44— css=width:auto— style=2— path=Icons/TaskIconNotStarted.png— series=— level=1— caption-flags=16— title=Task not started—

Icons/TaskIconNotStarted.png

TableCell— cph=42— clh=42— join=Y—

Text— cph=44— clh=44— css=font-family:verdana, helvetica— user-style=Button_Description—

Check!

TableCell— cph=42— clh=42— style=2—

Text— cph=44— clh=44— user-style=Button_Description—

TableCell— cph=42— clh=42— join=Y—

Text— cph=44— clh=44— user-style=Button_Description—

Stated fact 3

TableEnd— cph=50— clh=50—

Text— cph=158— clh=120—

While this is much better than not including the markup, there's still a problem. When you come back to it, it isn't clear which item needs to be checked. You might well end up wasting time checking both ‘Stated fact 2’ and ‘Stated fact 3’ or, worse, misremember which fact needed checking and only check ‘Stated fact 3’.

Text— cph=120— clh=82—

The easy way to tie the markup to the chunk to which it pertains is to join the two chunks: touch and hold on the swap arrow between until you get a chain link symbol and a dotted line between them.

Table— cph=64— clh=64— css=border-color:silver— style=2— series=— title=Task joined— header-rows=1—

TableColumn— cph=42— clh=42— css=border-right-style:hidden; width:auto— cell-style=padding-left:12pt; padding-right:0pt; margin-right:0pt—

TableColumn— cph=42— clh=42— css=width:6in— style=1—

TableRow— cph=42— clh=42—

TableRow— cph=42— clh=42— css=border-bottom-style:dashed—

TableRow— cph=42— clh=42— css=border-top-style:dashed—

TableRow— cph=42— clh=42—

TableCell— cph=42— clh=42— style=2—

Text— cph=44— clh=44— user-style=Button_Description—

TableCell— cph=42— clh=42— join=Y—

Text— cph=44— clh=44— user-style=Button_Description—

Stated fact 1

TableCell— cph=42— clh=42— style=2—

Text— cph=44— clh=44— user-style=Button_Description—

TableCell— cph=42— clh=42— join=Y—

Text— cph=44— clh=44— user-style=Button_Description—

Stated fact 2

TableCell— cph=42— clh=42— style=2—

Figure— cph=44— clh=44— css=width:auto— style=2— path=Icons/TaskIconNotStarted.png— series=— level=1— caption-flags=16— title=Task not started—

Icons/TaskIconNotStarted.png

TableCell— cph=42— clh=42— join=Y—

Text— cph=44— clh=44— css=font-family:verdana, helvetica— user-style=Button_Description—

Check!

TableCell— cph=42— clh=42— style=2—

Text— cph=44— clh=44— user-style=Button_Description—

TableCell— cph=42— clh=42— join=Y—

Text— cph=44— clh=44— user-style=Button_Description—

Stated fact 3

TableEnd— cph=50— clh=50—

Text— cph=101— clh=82—

Now it's obvious which fact needs to be checked. Better yet, the markup will stay with the correct stated fact if you reorder the list by swapping chunks.

I also find it useful to join related ideas and tasks.

Hope this helps,

If you want to try this quickly, just save this tip (from the Preview) and open it in the Editor - it's sneakily got the chunks described in the illustration embedded within it.

Here are the chunks as described in the example, so you can play with them in the editor:

    Item— cph=44— clh=44— level=1— format=12—

  • Stated fact 1

  • Item— cph=44— clh=44— level=1— format=12—

  • Stated fact 2

  • Task— cph=58— clh=58— progress=0— status=0—

    Task
    0%

    Check!

  • Stated fact 3

Touch and hold on the swap arrows to join those 2 chunks ↑
